Our parish has been blessed with a new patron: St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra in Lycia. This was among the names recommended originally to Archbishop Job at his request, and we are grateful to Metropolitan Jonah for following through with the archbishop's commitment and selecting St. Nicholas, from among the recommendations for a patron that our community had forwarded on.

Holy Hierarch Nicholas, pray to God for us!!!

Our parish's primary feast day will be May 9, the translation of St. Nicholas' relics to Bari.

Please be patient as we update our parish web information and other documents. This will be a gradual process, so you may continue to see references to St. Sophia from time to time. Thank you for your patience.

St. Thomas Sunday

Some icons depicting this event are inscribed "The Doubting Thomas." This is incorrect. In Greek, the inscription reads, "The Touching of Thomas." The Slavonic inscription is, "The Belief of Thomas." When St Thomas touched the Life-giving side of the Lord, he no longer had any doubts.

This day is also known as "Antipascha." This does not mean "opposed to Pascha," but "in place of Pascha." Beginning with this first Sunday after Pascha, the Church dedicates every Sunday of the year to the Lord's Resurrection. Sunday is called "Resurrection" in Russian, and "the Lord's Day" in Greek.

For consideration...

Why does the Lord allow eight days before appearing to him?

To allow time for each of Thomas's fellow disciples to tell him what they had witnessed. Hearing the same story from each one individually made him more willing to believe and increased his desire to see the Lord. In order to show that He Was invisibly present eight days earlier when Thomas had expressed disbelief, the Lord does not wait for Thomas to speak. Instead, He straighway proposes exactly what Thomas desires, quoting his very words. First, He rebukes Thomas, saying put your hand; then He admonishes him; do not be faithless, but believing. From this it is clear that Thomas' doubt was caused by lack of faith and not because he was careful to verify the facts (as some say, wishing to put him in a better light).

But as soon as Thomas touched the Lord's side, he was revealed as a superb theologian, proclaiming the two natures and single hypostasis of the one Christ. Thomas refers to the human nature of Christ, calling him Lord; for the term Lord (Kyrios) is applies not just to God, but to men as well. (Thinking that Jesus was the gardener, Mary Magdelene had said to Him, Sir (Kyrie), if you have taken HIm from here...). But when Thomas cries out ...and my God, he confesses Christ's divine essence and affirms that the names Lord and God refer to one and the same Person. By declaring blessed those who have not seen and yet believe, the Lord teaches us that faith means the acceptance of things not seen. He is referring to the first disciple, who believed without touching the side or the print of the nails, and second to those [of us] who would later believe.

Please remember that this is more a process of the saints picking us, than us picking them. We all need to be praying that these saints open the minds of our community to move as God wishes. While we should know their lives, the prayers that we've attached are even more important, if we make real use of them. This will help us best to find the right patron in a peaceful, Christian manner.

Today we began our adult education class, which will meet every Sunday at 10am. The books we are reviewing are Fr. Thomas Hopko's The Orthodox Faith, volumes one and two.

Here is the in-progress syllabus for what we will be doing. Right now, this only covers the first volume, so I will be updating this as we go.

Josh is still waiting on them to come in for purchase, but you can read the book online here.

As noted last night, we had a mistake in our Holy Week/Pascha schedule. The Paschal Vespers for St. George is Wednesday at 6:30pm. We're still planning some kind of pizza party afterward.

Joyous Feast!

The Archangel Gabriel is the first messenger of the good news of man's salvation, of this wondrous act of God's - for the salvation of man could not come about without God's wondrous action. The most pure Virgin Mary was the first to hear this good news and, first among human beings, trembled with fear and joy. Heaven was mirrore in her pure heart like the sun in clear water. Beneath her heart, the Lord, the Creator of th enew world and Renewer of the old, was to lay His head and clothe Himself in flesh.

But, by a wonder in these wondrous days, Elisabeth conceived in her old age. "How can this be?", ask those who skate sensuously over the surface of things as on ice over a lake filled with power and life. Even those who sense and admit that hte world can be saved by no other means than by God's wondrous act, turn their heads away and reject the marvel, asking themselves how this could be. Were God, the living and almighty, not to exis, then nothing could exist or come into being; nothing at all could happen. Neither a fertile nor an infertile woman could give birth. But, since God, the living and almighty, exists, then all is possible, especially because God is not bound by the natural laws that He gave to bind, not Himself but others, not to limit His power but to work His indispensible mercy. As with a man-made device that does not limit man's freedom to use it in one way or another, so also God's created world, with its natural laws, does not limit God's freedom to act in one way or another, according to His compassion and the needs of men. As though those who give birth do so by their own act and not by God's! God is especially careful of life, and gives it as He wills; giving conception where He wills.

God's great archangel appeared to a maiden, for it is through a maiden, the Most Pure, that He who is to begin the new world, the New Creation, is to come. The new world is to be modesty and purity, as opposed to the old, decaying world that had become impure through its stubborn disobedience to its Creator. The maiden is to serve as an entrance, through which the Savior of the world will enter the world as His workshop and dwelling place: a maiden, not a woman, for a woman, whatever spiritual heights she may attain, is bound to the old world and the old creation, being bound to her husband, and so is not free from worldly desires and a worldly outlook. Because of this, not a woman but a maiden, the Most Pure, perfectly given to God alone and separated in her heart from this world. Such a maiden grew up in this decaying world, like a lily on a dunghill, untouched by the world's decay.

-Remember the Apostles Fast begins on Monday, June 23
-Remember the Parish Yard Sale on Saturday, June 28. Please bring donations for the sale to the church or to the Anderson's home. They should be priced, or should arrive in time for Rachel to price them. If you are available, please also come to help work the sale on Saturday at the Anderson's home starting around 7 AM.
-Andrew is weighing the pro's and con's of having a weekly service regularly scheduled for Wednesdays (or another day) as opposed to being on various days for special feast. If you have any input or questions on this issue, please get with him.
-Because Fr. Michael will not be here to serve liturgy next week and there are two important feasts, we will sing matins instead of hours and typika. This will give you a chance to hear many of the hymns for the two feasts that you would not normally hear. This will start at 10:10 AM, the usual starting time for hours.
-Thank you to everyone who worked LINK this past Saturday.
